York maintained their 100 per cent home start to the League Two campaign with a 3-0 victory against 10-man Gillingham.
The New York Stadium crowd was stunned into silence when the Railwaymen opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Joe White swung a corner into the box and Dominic Iorfa had a home debut to forget when he inadvertently headed into his own net.
Joe Grey opened the scoring with Jovan Malcolm and Ollie Pearce also netting after Gills substitute Zane Albarus’ 70th-minute red card for two bookable offences.
York forged ahead in the second minute when Pearce’s inswinging cross picked out Grey at the far post and his scuffed shot bounced up off the turf to loop over away goalkeeper Oliver Wright.
Before the interval, Alex Newby and Alex Hunt both hit the frame of the goal as York pushed for a second.
Albarus, brough on in the 60th minute, received his marching orders 10 minutes later following fouls on Hunt and Pearce before Malcolm doubled the lead with his third goal of the season.
The on-loan Stevenage striker muscled himself into a shooting position before drilling home a low 15-yard drive in the 75th minute.
It was 3-0 five minutes later when Hunt’s corner was cleared as far as Harry Boyes, whose 25-yard shot took a nick off Pearce to wrongfoot Wright.
James Brophy was denied a consolation for Gareth Ainsworth’s side when his curling edge-of-the-box attempt struck the crossbar.
