Ten-man Rochdale survived a Fleetwood onslaught to earn a 2-1 victory at Highbury.
The visitors raced into a two-goal lead inside 14 minutes, Dajaune Brown netting with a first-time finish from Glenn Middleton’s cross in the eighth minute before Aden Flint doubled Dale’s advantage, coolly slotting home after Brown’s shot fell kindly into his path.
Mark Helm hit back on the half-hour mark, pouncing on a loose ball in midfield and finishing neatly into the bottom corner.
Fleetwood pushed hard for an equaliser, with Ched Evans’ shot deflected inches wide, Raffaele Cirino hitting the side-netting and Aaron Loupalo-Bi narrowly wide with a fierce low drive.
The home side dominated the second half but Lewis McCann clearing the bar by inches was as close as they got.
Dale’s task got even tougher on 69 minutes when Tobi Adebayo-Rowling received a second yellow card for a shirt pull.
Goalkeeper Sam Waller then denied Evans and Flint got his head to Ronan Coughlan’s goalbound shot as valiant defending, and Fleetwood’s wayward finishing, saw Dale hold on for the win.
