João Cancelo’s goal for Barcelona against Racing Santander before the international break has been voted Goal of the Month for September in La Liga.

Cancelo’s thunderous long-range strike opened the scoring at Camp Nou on the way to a 7-2 victory for the champions. The shot hit a recorded speed of 128.5 km/h and the former Benfica man admitted it was a special moment.

“It was the best goal of my career,” Cancelo said last month. “And even more special because it was for this club. I’ve wanted to come here since the beginning of last season.

“I didn’t [previously] have many opportunities to play as a starter, but I always trained well to help the team when needed. I needed this goal to gain more confidence. I got it. You need a bit of luck, but the important thing is that the team won.”

Cancelo has since added to the goal at international level, putting his name on the scoresheet for Portugal in their 4-2 win over Denmark last week.
