There is an understandable temptation, when discussing Lamine Yamal<\/a>, to begin with his age.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

19. Still a teenager. Still young enough for every record he breaks to arrive with a footnote explaining how absurd it is.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n
\n
\n

However, the strongest argument Barcelona<\/a> can make for Lamine Yamal winning the 2026 Ballon d\u2019Or begins by doing precisely the opposite.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Let us forget his age for a moment. Let us focus on the footballer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The best player in La Liga<\/a>. The creative reference point of the Spanish champions. A winger who produced six goals and four assists in the Champions League. A World Cup<\/a> winner. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Most importantly, a player whose influence on matches goes far beyond what numbers can quantify.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lamine\u2019s age makes all of that extraordinary. However, it should not be what makes him worthy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Ballon d\u2019Or was never supposed to be a mere numbers game<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n
\n

There are formidable arguments to be made elsewhere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Harry Kane finished the 2025-26 season with an extraordinary 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Kylian Mbappe scored 10 times at the World Cup and collected the Golden Boot. Rodri was named the tournament\u2019s best player after conducting Spain all the way to the trophy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lamine cannot and does not need to beat those numbers. His argument is different<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

France Football\u2019s own regulations place individual performances and a player\u2019s decisive and impressive character first among the Ballon d\u2019Or criteria, ahead of collective achievements and trophies. The assessment period runs from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That distinction matters. Because the Ballon d\u2019Or is not a glorified version of the European Golden Shoe. Goals matter. Assists matter. Trophies matter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Equally important is a footballer\u2019s ability to alter the dimension of a match simply by being on the pitch. Few players did that better than Lamine last season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is high time to stop calling it potential<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n
\n

There comes a point where talent and potential metamorphose into responsibility. For Lamine, it happened last season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Barcelona retained La Liga with 94 points and their No. 10 was subsequently named the competition\u2019s Player of the Season after registering 16 goals and 12 assists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Not best young player. Best player. That difference should sit at the centre of his Ballon d\u2019Or case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ever since he broke into the first team as a 16-year-old, football has watched Lamine through the lens of tomorrow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

2025-26 removed the need for that projection. Barcelona did not merely provide a stage for an exciting teenager. They increasingly gave him responsibility for deciding matches. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Opponents prepared for him accordingly. Double and triple-teaming him became a common feature. Defensive blocks tilted towards the right. Full-backs thought twice before advancing up the pitch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Despite all this, Lamine kept producing at an astonishing rate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The magic has the numbers to support it<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

There is another danger in making Lamine\u2019s case: romanticising him so much that the numbers start feeling non-existent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They are not. He ended Barcelona\u2019s Champions League campaign with six goals and four assists, becoming the youngest player ever to reach 10 combined goals and assists in a single edition of the competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

By the end of the campaign, he had also scored 11 Champions League goals before turning 19, more than any player in the competition\u2019s history, surpassing Mbappe\u2019s previous mark of 10.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Those are not numbers belonging to a talented prodigy. They belong to an elite attacker. That is what makes Lamine\u2019s candidacy so compelling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The eye test and the spreadsheet actually support each other. The dribbles have end product. The imagination produces goals. There is method to his madness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The hardest trick was doing it again<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n
\n

Football fell in love with Lamine Yamal because he could do things defenders did not expect. However, by the time the 2025-26 season came around, the novelty factor to his game was long gone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Opponents knew where Lamine wanted the ball. Full-backs knew the danger of allowing him onto his left foot. Opposition coaches knew Bar\u00e7a would search for him whenever matches seemed to tighten. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The teenager who once benefited from being a surprise package was now the first name on every opposition game plan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And still, the answers kept coming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

His consistency and importance in decisive matches throughout the campaign were incredible. Barcelona secured 94 points and retained the championship, with their No. 10 established as one of their protagonists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That is the evolution which matters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lamine finished second to Ousmane Dembele in the Ballon d\u2019Or rankings last year. Instead of resting on his laurels, he has gone on to have an even better follow-up season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This is precisely the quality that separates Lamine from other young talents in world football.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The World Cup as an asterisk<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

A serious case for Lamine also requires admitting what his World Cup was not. He did not win the Golden Boot. Mbappe did. He was not named the tournament\u2019s best player. Rodri was.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Spain\u2019s success belonged to a collective, and pretending Lamine single-handedly dragged La Roja<\/em> towards the trophy would only weaken the argument. He was not even the best youngster at the tournament, with Pau Cubarsi taking that accolade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What he did was play all eight matches as Spain became world champions, culminating in the 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lamine and Cubarsi became only the fourth and fifth teenagers to appear in a World Cup final, and both finished it as champions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

More importantly, as his fitness and rhythm improved during the tournament, so did his ability to destabilise opponents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He arrived as one of Spain\u2019s difference-makers. He left as a world champion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Do not make Lamine wait for an award he has already earned<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n
\n

The strangest obstacle facing Lamine is the enormous future everyone assumes lies ahead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

With young players, there is always another year. Another Ballon d\u2019Or ceremony. Another Champions League campaign. Another opportunity to say: now he is ready.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, awards are supposed to recognise seasons, not forecast careers. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The previous campaign made Lamine the player who was named La Liga\u2019s best, delivered 10 Champions League goal contributions, rewrote European records and finished the summer with the World Cup in his hands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The teenager himself made his argument differently this week. Speaking to L\u2019Equipe<\/em>, he said his strongest case was his way of playing<\/a> and being the kind of footballer people want to switch on a match to watch. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

There is something old-fashioned and poetic about the idea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Football as entertainment. Football as imagination. Football as the anticipation that rises around a stadium when one player receives the ball.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The stats qualify Lamine for the Ballon d\u2019Or. The titles strengthen his claim. The football he played explains why he should win it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Football can choose to keep talking about Lamine as its future. It is time for the Ballon d\u2019Or this year to recognise that the future is already here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
