La Liga<\/a> president Javier Tebas has weighed in on the refereeing controversy surrounding Atletico Madrid\u2019s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid<\/a>, acknowledging the complaints from Jose Mourinho\u2019s side while rejecting the manner in which they were made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The derby produced several contentious decisions, with Real Madrid particularly unhappy<\/a> over incidents involving Cristian Romero, Kang-in Lee and Dean Huijsen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The debate intensified after Mourinho publicly questioned<\/a> the officiating, while Real Madrid also criticised referee Ortiz Arias.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tebas says Real Madrid did not lose because of refereeing<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Tebas accepted that Real Madrid had reasons to complain, but drew a clear line between understanding the frustration and agreeing with the way the club expressed it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Addressing the reaction after the derby, the LaLiga president said, \u201cI understand the complaints, but never the manner in which they were made.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

More importantly, Tebas rejected the suggestion that the controversial decisions ultimately determined the result.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

After considering the major incidents from the match, he gave his assessment of their influence on the 2-1 defeat, stating, \u201cMadrid didn\u2019t lose because of those incidents.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The La Liga president then addressed the decisions individually, beginning with Huijsen\u2019s second-half dismissal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Real Madrid defender was sent off after VAR intervention following the foul on Giuliano Simeone, and Tebas had no reservations about the decision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHuijsen\u2019s was definitely a red card,\u201d<\/strong> he analysed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tebas disagrees with Madrid over Romero and Kang-in Lee<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

The more controversial part of Tebas\u2019 assessment concerned the two first-half incidents that dominated Real Madrid\u2019s complaints.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Romero\u2019s challenge on Jude Bellingham<\/a> was reviewed by VAR after the initial decision went against the Madrid midfielder. Tebas believed the Atletico defender\u2019s contact did not reach the threshold for a dismissal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe other one, no, it wasn\u2019t a red card. You could see he got to the ball first.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kang-in Lee\u2019s challenge on Federico Valverde produced a different response. The Atletico midfielder was not shown a card, and VAR did not intervene, although the CTA has since acknowledged that the challenge should have resulted in a red card<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tebas nevertheless considered the incident open to interpretation and explained why he understood the decision made during the match.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAnd if not, the play happened so quickly that I understand what happened and that\u2019s that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tebas criticises pressure on referees<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

The dispute then extended beyond the pitch after Atletico posted the message<\/a> \u2018Stop refereeing harassment now\u2019 on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Tebas said he had not seen the post but used the opportunity to restate La Liga\u2019s position on Real Madrid Television.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t seen the tweet. We denounced the behaviour of Real Madrid Television some time ago and, after yesterday\u2019s events, we must continue to uphold ethical standards.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an unfair and cruel way of putting pressure on the referee.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

With Ortiz Arias continuing to dominate the conversation after the derby, Tebas ultimately chose not to add another personal assessment of the referee\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He concluded: \u201cIt\u2019s others who are taking centre stage, so I\u2019m not going to give my opinion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
