According to Catalunya Radio<\/em>, FC Barcelona<\/a> have turned down Revolut as their prospective financial sponsor, due to the British Fintech company\u2019s association with Luis Figo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Catalan giants are on the lookout for a new financial sponsor. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u2018CaixaBank\u2019 held that position for many years, but its contract with the La Liga<\/a> champions expired more than a year ago and has not yet been renewed, although negotiations remain ongoing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Figo\u2019s connection to the campaign caused a problem<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

In the meantime, Barcelona had considered bringing digital bank Revolut on board as a new sponsor. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, according to the report, the club ultimately decided against the proposal for reasons that were not financial, but emotional.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The issue for Barcelona was former player Luis Figo, who is the face of Revolut\u2019s latest advertising campaign.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The former Portuguese international appears prominently in the bank\u2019s promotional material and even makes references in the adverts to his controversial 2000 transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Figo\u2019s move to the Santiago Bernabeu from Camp Nou remains one of the most contentious transfers in Barcelona\u2019s history. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The former Ballon d\u2019Or winner joined Real Madrid from Bar\u00e7a after a secret agreement between his agent and Florentino Perez.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Los Blancos<\/em> shelled out \u20ac62 million<\/a> to complete the transfer from Barcelona, making him the most expensive footballer in the world at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Prior to that transfer, Figo had spent five years at the Catalan club, making 249 appearances, in which he scored 45 and assisted 91 goals. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He won to La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, and one European Cup Winners\u2019 Cup, among other honours, with the Blaugrana<\/em>, before being crowned the Ballon d\u2019Or winner in 2000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Therefore, his move to Real Madrid sparked a strong reaction among Bar\u00e7a fans, who branded Figo a traitor, and targeted him with abuse during the subsequent El Clasico<\/em>, even throwing a severed pig\u2019s head at him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

More than 20 years of that controversial move, Figo still remains a very divisive figure among the Barcelona fanbase.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As such, his involvement with Revolut became particularly sensitive from the Catalan club\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And therefore, Barcelona ultimately rejected Revolut\u2019s proposal despite having previously considered the digital bank as a potential financial partner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
