La Liga<\/a> president Javier Tebas has criticised Real Madrid<\/a> trio Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe and Ibrahima Konate<\/a> after they partially covered shirts supporting Ceuta<\/a> before the match against Elche.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The three players wore the shirts folded over rather than displaying the message in full at the Mart\u00ednez Valero, unlike the other players involved in the pre-match initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tebas has now made clear that he disagrees with their decision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s very wrong,\u201d<\/strong> said Tebas, as per MARCA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The La Liga president argued that the gesture should be viewed differently from an individual political or ideological statement because the initiative involved the clubs and the competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He described the squad wearing the shirts as \u201can institutional act, a club act\u201d<\/strong> rather than \u201ca personal act where one has to express an opinion\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The shirts carried a message of support for the people of Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city in North Africa that has recently been at the centre of a migration-related crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The initiative was proposed by Elche and accepted by Real Madrid, and Tebas maintained that the players should follow the club-led initiative when it does not concern ideological issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The La Liga president also explained his view that sporting organisations have the authority to organise these types of gestures, with events approved within the competition\u2019s framework.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe whole squad coming out wearing the shirt is a club-led initiative. Players must wear the shirt. Because coming out with the shirt folded is like not wearing it at all,\u201d<\/strong> insisted Tebas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He also rejected the suggestion that the shirts represented a political statement, saying the initiative \u201cshould not be subject to the players\u2019 opinions\u201d<\/strong> when it does not involve ideological issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Mbappe has already explained his decision<\/a>, saying he wanted to express solidarity with Ceuta while also acknowledging migrants who had lost their lives or were facing difficult conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Real Madrid, meanwhile, has defended the players\u2019 freedom to make their own choices regarding the gesture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
