Real Madrid\u2019s 4-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano<\/a> may have delivered another three points, but Santiago Canizares believes the result is hiding a problem that could eventually cost Jose Mourinho\u2019s side against stronger opposition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The former Spain and Valencia goalkeeper was particularly critical of Real Madrid<\/a>\u2019s work without the ball, arguing that their attacking players are not doing enough defensively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His comments came after a match that produced two very different versions of Madrid at the Bernabeu.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Canizares questions Real Madrid\u2019s defensive effort<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Mourinho? No\u2014the issue is not the manager. Madrid produced a brilliant first half, scoring three times and earning an enthusiastic standing ovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Yet the mood changed dramatically after the interval<\/a>, when Rayo caused problems, and the home crowd eventually responded with boos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The La Liga<\/a> icon believes that contrast exposes a tactical weakness rather than being simply an off-day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMadrid have one thing \u2013 the best quality a team can have \u2013 and that is effectiveness; there\u2019s no doubt about that,\u201d<\/strong> he said, before adding that \u201cif a team wants to be the best in Europe, it has to be able to play in different styles.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For Canizares, the biggest concern starts with Real Madrid\u2019s forwards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen they don\u2019t have the ball, what the strikers do is appalling. It\u2019s contagious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOne looks at the other, the other looks at the other, and thinks, \u2018Ah, well, if he\u2019s not moving, neither am I\u2019,\u201d<\/strong> he argued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A warning beyond the Rayo result<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Notably, that lack of pressure can leave the rest of the team exposed. The midfield is forced deeper, the defence becomes easier to reach, and opponents are given opportunities that should not exist in the first place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe team falls apart; the midfielders have to drop back, link up with the defence, and any team can create chances against Real Madrid.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t competitive, and it needs to be sorted out. If you don\u2019t do this all year round, then on the day you actually have to do it, you might not do it quite right.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That assessment is difficult to dismiss after what happened in the second half.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rayo may have ultimately lost comfortably on the scoreboard, but Madrid surrendered the control they had established before the break.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The 4-1 scoreline therefore gives Madrid the points Mourinho wanted, but not necessarily the complete performance he would have demanded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
