Lamine Yamal<\/a> has made his case for the Ballon d\u2019Or<\/a> in typically confident fashion, naming himself alongside Kylian Mbappe as one of the two players he believes stand above the rest this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Barcelona<\/a> forward made the claim in a preview of his upcoming interview with Universo Valdano<\/a>, shortly after scoring twice against Valencia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With the Ballon d\u2019Or ceremony scheduled for 26 October in London, Yamal was asked who he would give the award to.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWho would I give it to? The best player in the world. Who are they going to give it to?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHonestly, as the best in the world, I think there might be two of us, me and Mbappe, but I think this year I\u2019d deserve it for what I\u2019ve achieved.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cEveryone who watches the matches knows that,\u201d<\/strong> the Bar\u00e7a forward said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There is a substantial body of work behind the 19-year-old\u2019s confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Yamal helped Barcelona win La Liga<\/a> and the Spanish Super Cup last season while setting new personal scoring benchmarks, finishing with 24 goals and 18 assists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

His international campaign brought another major honour, with Spain lifting the World Cup<\/a>. Yet Yamal admits the tournament did not leave him satisfied with his own contribution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAfter winning the World Cup, I wasn\u2019t happy. It\u2019s true about the injury, but that\u2019s got nothing to do with it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI know that if the World Cup were to come around again, I\u2019d have performed just as well if I hadn\u2019t had the injury. I did a lot of things that people didn\u2019t see.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

For example, I think it\u2019s incredible for a manager to have a player who can draw three defenders away, but I wasn\u2019t happy with my own performance because I know that another player performing at my level would have had a great World Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBut for me, I could have done more. I did help the team, but I\u2019m really looking forward to the next one,\u201d<\/strong> argued the Bar\u00e7a striker.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A hunger that shows no sign of fading<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Yamal has already collected<\/a> an extraordinary list of honours for a player who is still only 19: a European Championship, a World Cup, three La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups and a Copa del Rey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

His message is that those achievements have not reduced his ambition. If anything, they have raised the standard he expects from himself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere have been great stars in football, like Leo, Cristiano or Diego \u2013 whom I haven\u2019t been able to watch \u2013 but never so early on has anyone won so much.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cTake Pele, for example \u2013 he did win a lot at a young age, but not so recently.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAnd there are people who think that just because I\u2019ve won things at some point, I\u2019ll take my foot off the gas, but I know I\u2019ve got a thousand things to do to go down in football history,\u201d<\/strong> he concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
