Esteban Granero<\/a> believes Jose Mourinho\u2019s return to Real Madrid<\/a> is exactly what the club needs, backing his former manager to succeed during his second spell in charge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Granero, who worked under Mourinho during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, spoke to AS<\/a> about the Portuguese coach, Real Madrid\u2019s chances this season<\/a> and the remarkable form of Kylian Mbappe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For the former midfielder, there is little mystery surrounding Mourinho\u2019s credentials, as his familiarity with the club makes the appointment particularly convincing in Granero\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What makes Mourinho different<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Asked about Mourinho\u2019s return, Granero was unequivocal in his assessment, stating,<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s great news for both Real Madrid and Mourinho. He\u2019s a manager whose qualities and abilities need no introduction or explanation. He knows the club better than any other manager.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI believe that Real Madrid, given the circumstances they find themselves in, are backing a very reliable manager who will do very well for them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Granero also offered a memorable description of the manager\u2019s personality, drawing on his own experience of working with him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf I had to describe him, I\u2019d say Mourinho is a cross between an army colonel and an orchestra conductor. He has the firmness and authority often associated with the army.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI believe a football team must, in part, be like an army in terms of loyalty, unity and the collective fight for a common goal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThat stems from his knowledge of football, his tactical experience, his analysis of opponents and his analytical skills. He is exceptionally gifted in all these areas.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Granero backs Real Madrid as La Liga<\/a> favourites<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

There was little hesitation when Granero was asked whether Madrid should be considered favourites for La Liga.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re the favourites for everything, as always.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His confidence is understandable given the attacking talent available to Mourinho, with Mbappe already producing numbers that have attracted widespread attention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Granero believes the Frenchman belongs in a rare category of footballers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a very special player. It\u2019s been a very long time since we\u2019ve seen a footballer like him.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI struggle to recall players with such mastery of all aspects of the game and with such attacking prowess. He\u2019s a force to be reckoned with, a weapon of mass destruction.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo was inevitable, and Granero sees a connection despite clear differences between the two forwards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re very different players, but you can tell that Cristiano was Kylian\u2019s idol. And Kylian is following in his footsteps,\u201d<\/strong> he concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
