Jos\u00e9\u00a0Mourinho opted to praise\u00a0the performance of his Real Madrid side, following\u00a0their first loss of the new season in La Liga<\/a>\u00a0at the hands of Real Betis\u00a0on Friday evening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A late goal by Betis substitute Troy Parrott\u00a0in the 81st\u00a0minute ended Real\u2019s 100% record in their\u00a0fourth\u00a0game of the new league campaign. The visitors were unfortunate not to level the scores late on, with a stunning overhead kick by\u00a0Carlos Espi ruled out for a marginal\u00a0offside, before\u00a0Kylian Mbappe missed a stoppage-time penalty which was saved\u00a0by Alvaro Valles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mourinho\u2019s side had 59% possession on the night as well as double the\u00a0attempts(20) of their opponents but left with a defeat having failed to find a ruthless edge in front of goal. Bernardo Silva did not start\u00a0in the\u00a0Real\u00a0line-up\u00a0for the second match\u00a0running, but\u00a0was introduced\u00a0for the latter stages\u00a0as Mourinho made changes which he claims were not a reflection on the performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe team played a great game,\u201d Mourinho told reporters after the match.\u00a0\u201cSometimes you lose and you\u00a0don’t\u00a0know why or how to explain it. We were very dominant, the\u00a0centre-backs were imperious and controlled absolutely everything. A lot of attacking play and a lot of scoring opportunities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf the game ends in a draw,\u00a0we’ll\u00a0be frustrated because we did more, so imagine how we feel about the defeat. The team was always good. Betis had some\u00a0counter-attacks, and\u00a0that’s\u00a0normal. The game was all about Real Madrid. Betis, who played to draw,\u00a0hit the jackpot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI might change my mind after watching the game tomorrow, but today, from the bench, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know why we lost. I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0justify it. Mourinho did, however, have one area of complaint\u00a0regarding\u00a0his team\u2019s lack of\u00a0nous during certain moments. The Real boss was himself booked for\u00a0interactions from the\u00a0sidelines, but\u00a0felt his team did not approach the game with enough awareness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Betis players are smarter than the\u00a0Real Madrid\u00a0players, who are pure,\u00a0naive,\u201d Mourinho said.\u00a0\u201cIn the first play of the game, it was a clear yellow card for a player who fouled\u00a0Valverde\u00a0,\u00a0and then another yellow for a player who committed a serious foul on\u00a0Vini Jr.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Madrid players\u00a0immediately\u00a0bounced back, but the Betis players are smarter and, with the support of a fantastic fanbase that pushes, pressures, and achieves these kinds of things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u00a0don’t\u00a0know how Arda finished the first half with a yellow card when he had played so much and only committed a minor foul and received a yellow card, but then they were all over him. I had to take him off because he was in a dangerous situation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI made\u00a0changes\u00a0not because I\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0happy with the team, but to take off players who had yellow cards.\u00a0I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0like that, but after losing a game, to say now that we win or lose because of a yellow card, I\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0do that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0naive\u00a0in the sense that Betis players try to influence the referee’s decision over the smallest things.\u00a0Real Madrid\u00a0players, in situations that should\u00a0warrant\u00a0a yellow card, like when he\u00a0stepped\u00a0on\u00a0Valverde,\u00a0stayed on their feet.\u00a0That’s\u00a0worthy of a Real Madrid captain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOn the other side, that kid who was lying there in front of my bench, I thought an ambulance was coming, but in the end, there\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0one.\u00a0That’s\u00a0what I mean.
