The meeting came on <a href=\"https:\/\/onefootball.com\/en\/team\/valencia-143\">Valencia<\/a>\u2019s 1982\/83 home opener against <a href=\"https:\/\/onefootball.com\/en\/team\/barcelona-5\">Barcelona<\/a> at Mestalla, with Kempes back before his own fans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As CiberChe notes, the pair had first crossed paths on 10 April 1981 in Boca Juniors v River Plate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Valencia had finished fifth the previous season and began with fanfare, Kempes returning and Barcelona fielding the newly signed Maradona.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Miljan Miljani\u0107\u2019s side won 2-1 after trailing to Maradona\u2019s 20th-minute strike. Tendillo levelled on 47 minutes, and Id\u00edgoras grabbed a late winner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That season Valencia reached the quarter-finals, losing 1-2 and 3-1 to <a href=\"https:\/\/onefootball.com\/en\/team\/anderlecht-369\">Anderlecht<\/a>, who went on to lift the trophy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onefootball.com\/en\/competition\/laliga-10\/fixtures\">La Liga<\/a> proved arduous, with long spells in the relegation places before safety was clinched on the final day.
